Speech-Language Pathology Services
Speech-language pathology services are available in a variety of settings, including schools and private practices. Each setting has its own unique advantages and disadvantages.
School-Based Speech-Language Pathology Services
School-based speech-language pathology services are provided by speech-language pathologists (SLPs) who are employed by a school district. These services are provided to students who have been identified as having a speech or language impairment that interferes with their ability to learn. Students must meet specific eligibility criteria to receive services. Services focus on helping students succeed in the classroom, rather than on addressing their overall communication needs. Students are often seen in groups of two or more during the school day.
Private Practice Speech-Language Pathology Services
Private practice speech-language pathology services are provided by SLPs who are self-employed or who work for a private practice or hospital. These services are typically available to anyone who needs them, regardless of age or diagnosis. Services can focus on both overall communication skills as well as their academic needs. Clients are seen in a 1:1 setting either at a facility, the clients home, or a public community location (e.g., park, library etc). Payments vary depending on your location. Some private practice’s are private pay (do not accept insurance), some accept both private and government insurance, and some places accept both private pay and insurance.
